WPL Championship

A women's Twenty20 cricket franchise league is called the Women's Premier League (WPL) in India. The Board of Control for Cricket in India owns and runs it (BCCI). The first season began in March 2023, and Mumbai Indians won the inaugural championship. There were games between five franchises in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. The Women's T20 Challenge was India's first significant women's Twenty20 tournament. This competition began as a one-match event in 2018 and was increased to a three-team, three-match event in 2019, 2020, and 2022. The Women's T20 Challenge would be replaced with a women's version of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the country's main Twenty20 franchise cricket competition, according to BCCI President Sourav Ganguly's announcement in February 2022. Through a closed auction procedure, investors acquired the initial franchise rights in January 2023, raising a total of 4,669 crore. The league is the second-highest valued women's sports league in the globe, just behind the Women's National Basketball Association in the United States, according to Jack Genovese of the media research company Ampere Analytics. Viacom18 announced in January 2023 that it has purchased the worldwide media rights for TV and digital broadcasts of the competition. The deal, which would last for five years and cost 120 million US dollars, was valued 951 crore.

During the first five years of the competition, the BCCI plans to divide 80% of the income among the franchise owners. 60% of the income from the next five seasons will be split, and from seasons 11 to 15, 50% of the profits will be given out. In addition, the franchisees will get 80% of the money made from the competition's central licensing rights. Franchises will also make money through selling goods, tickets, and advertising. The league's inaugural season is being televised in India via the JioCinema app and the Sports18 TV channel, both of which are owned by Viacom18.
